More Than 3,000 Christians Killed in Nigeria in First Eight Months of 2026: Report
A new report documents thousands of Christian deaths and abductions amid continuing violence in Nigeria.

Violence against Christians in Nigeria has claimed thousands of lives this year, according to a new report documenting killings, kidnappings, and attacks on churches across the country.
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, or Intersociety, reported that 3,083 Christians were killed and 3,193 were abducted between January and August. The Nigerian civil rights organization also reported hundreds of attacks on churches during that period.
The findings represent an increase from the organization's earlier assessment. Intersociety previously reported 2,550 Christians killed and 2,800 abducted during the first six months of the year.
According to reporting by Nigerian newspaper Vanguard, Intersociety recorded another 437 Christian deaths and 393 abductions during July and August. August alone accounted for 138 reported deaths and 180 abductions.
The organization documented violence in several parts of Nigeria, including Plateau and Benue states, two areas that have repeatedly experienced deadly attacks.
Intersociety said its research draws on primary and secondary information, including accounts from residents, survivors, and eyewitnesses in affected communities. The organization focuses on attacks it classifies as religiously motivated and attributes many of the deaths to Islamist extremist organizations and armed groups.
The reported totals are Intersociety's estimates rather than an official government casualty count, and the figures have not been independently verified.
Vanguard reported that the organization's methodology also uses what Intersociety describes as "dark figures" when attempting to account for victims whose circumstances or whereabouts remain unknown.
Nigeria's security crisis is complex, involving extremist organizations, criminal groups, and communal conflicts with religious, ethnic, economic, and territorial dimensions. Christian communities have faced repeated attacks, particularly in parts of the country's Middle Belt.
Intersociety also reported that clergy were among those affected by the violence, with priests and pastors killed or abducted during the first eight months of the year.
The latest report provides another look at the continuing human toll of Nigeria's security crisis as Christian communities face killings, kidnappings, and displacement.
